Qatar Airways from Australia | Qsuite, Doha and Booking Advice
Qatar Airways flies the best business class seat in the sky to a hub that is geographically the wrong way to most of where Australians are going. That contradiction is the entire story, and it is why the airline is so often the answer and so often not.
The best seat, the wrong direction
Qatar Airways presents Australians with a genuine puzzle, and it is worth stating plainly before any of the praise.
Doha sits west of India. If you are flying from Sydney to Mumbai or Delhi, going via Doha means flying past your destination and then doubling back. On a map it looks absurd, and on the clock it is: the Gulf routings to India are almost always the longest way to get there.
And yet we quote Qatar constantly, and clients take it constantly, and they come back happy. The reasons are the Qsuite, the pricing, and Doha itself, in roughly that order. Ask us to price Qatar on your dates.
The Qsuite is not marketing
Business class hard products are mostly variations on a theme, and then there is this one.
The Qsuite has a door that closes. Not a token panel: an actual door, which turns the seat into a small room. Every seat has direct aisle access. And in the centre pairs, the divider drops and two seats become a double bed, which is a thing no other airline offers as a standard configuration and which explains why we book more honeymoons and anniversaries on Qatar than on anything else.
Two honest caveats. It is not on the entire fleet, so the same flight number can be a Qsuite or a conventional business cabin depending on the aircraft rostered. That is an equipment question, which is an agent question, and we check it before we quote rather than after you have paid. And a Qsuite on a shorter sector is a lot of money for a nap.

Economy, honestly
Everything above is about the front of the aircraft, so here is the back.
Qatar's economy is good. It is not transformative. The seat is a normal long-haul economy seat, the food is above average, the entertainment is excellent and the crew are attentive. It is meaningfully better than the worst options on the corridor and it is not dramatically better than Singapore Airlines or Malaysia Airlines in the same cabin.
What economy passengers do get is Doha, and Doha is a genuinely comfortable airport to be tired in, which counts for more on a long journey than the meal did.
So our honest advice: if you are flying economy to India, Qatar is a fine choice and the deciding factor should be the fare and the arrival time, not the brand. If you are flying business, the brand is doing real work.
Doha, and why the long way sometimes wins
Qatar prices the routing to compete, which is the whole commercial logic. The airline knows Doha is the long way to Mumbai, so it makes the fare argue for itself, and there are weeks where a Qsuite via Doha costs less than a conventional business seat via a closer hub. That is not a mistake; that is the business model.
There are also itineraries where Doha stops being a detour and becomes obvious. Anything continuing to Europe, the UK, Africa or the Middle East puts Doha genuinely on the way, and then Qatar's routing is the sensible one rather than the scenic one. The hub itself is good. Al Mourjan is one of the world's best lounges and the airport is calm, walkable and well designed, which is not universally true of the region. If you have a long connection, that matters.
Doha as a stopover, which people underuse
Two days here is a genuinely good idea and almost nobody takes it.
The Museum of Islamic Art is world class by any standard, in a building that is worth the trip on its own. Souq Waqif in the evening is a proper Middle Eastern market with restaurants, falconry and shisha rather than a reconstruction of one. The Corniche walk at dusk is lovely. There is a desert with an inland sea in it.
It is not Dubai. It is smaller, quieter and considerably less interested in spectacle, and for a lot of travellers that is a recommendation rather than a criticism. A two-night stop on a through fare frequently costs little or nothing extra and turns a very long journey into two civil ones. Ask for it in the quote notes.
Qantas status, and why that matters here
Qatar Airways sits in Oneworld, which puts it in the same alliance as Qantas.
For Australians this is a bigger deal than it sounds. If you hold Qantas status, it works on Qatar metal: lounge access, priority boarding, priority baggage, the lot. And the points and status credits earn accordingly. For anyone with a meaningful Qantas balance or status they want to protect, Qatar is frequently the best non-Qantas option available, and it goes to places Qantas does not.

Where the wholesale fare comes from
Airlines defend the price on their own website and release seats quietly through agent channels, because a visible discount devalues the product and an invisible one fills the aircraft. On Qatar this shows up three ways.
Allocation fares sit below the airline site for the same seat on the same aircraft, and in the premium cabins the gap on this carrier is frequently four figures. Companion pricing on two or more premium seats surfaces rates that a single-seat search structurally cannot see, which matters given how many couples book the centre Qsuites. And mixed-cabin construction, the Qsuite on the long overnight sector and something cheaper on the short one, is exactly the shape this airline's network invites and exactly the shape booking engines build worst.

When we recommend Qatar, and when we do not
We recommend it when the Qsuite is the point, when you are continuing to Europe or Africa, when you hold Qantas status, when the fare undercuts the closer hubs, and when a couple wants the double bed.
We do not recommend it when total travel time to India is the priority, because the geography is what it is and Air India's non-stop or a Singapore routing will beat it. We do not recommend it when you are flying economy and something shorter costs the same. And we do not recommend paying a large premium for a Qsuite on a sector short enough that you will barely use the bed.
