When to go, and when to book

School holidays and Easter. The pressure weeks. Non-stops sell out early and price hard. Book three to four months ahead, or shift two days either side of the holiday boundary; the fare bracket often changes completely across that line.

July to September (dry season). Bali's best weather and the route's longest peak. Book three months out for choice. This is also when one-stop routings earn their keep: when the non-stops spike, a Singapore Airlines or Malaysia Airlines connection frequently saves real money and adds a lounge break.

May, June, November. The shoulder secret: excellent weather odds, calm fares, quiet beaches. If your dates are your own, aim here and book four to eight weeks out.

Wet season (roughly December to March, minus the holiday spike). Afternoon storms, green landscapes, the gentlest prices of the year and superb villa value. January and February are the honest bargains for couples who do not mind a dramatic sky.

Timing your flights like a regular

• Fly out in the morning. Morning non-stops land mid-afternoon Bali time: pool, sunset, dinner, and the holiday starts the same day. With the tiny time difference (two to three hours), there is no jet lag to sleep off.
• Mind the Denpasar evening queue. Many arrivals stack into the late afternoon and evening, and immigration queues stretch. Pre-purchasing the visa on arrival online and pre-booking your hotel transfer turns a scratchy hour into a short walk.
• Coming home, take the overnight thoughtfully. Evening departures land in Sydney at dawn. Fine for adults heading straight to work (in theory); with young kids, the afternoon departure and a movie each is usually the saner ride.

How we book the three classic Bali trips

The family week. Four or more seats together, morning flights both ways, 30kg each because the villa has a washing machine but the markets have everything else. School-holiday families who book three to four months out fly for sensible money; the rest fund the airlines' best quarter. We also seat the kids at booking and load the meals, so the airport is boring in the best way.

The honeymoon or big anniversary. This is the trip where the cabin upgrade question deserves a real answer, and where we quietly tell the airline it is a honeymoon, because on the right day that note turns into champagne or a better row. Pair the flights with an adults-first villa area (Uluwatu or Ubud over Kuta) and the whole week changes register.

The group escape. Hens, bucks, big birthdays, surf trips: eight to twenty people, three budgets, one group chat. A held block keeps everyone on the same flight at the same rate while the stragglers commit, which is cheaper and far less painful than eight separate bookings converging at the gate.

Denpasar arrival, decoded

Ngurah Rai airport sits conveniently between Kuta and Jimbaran, but the last metres are where first-timers lose an hour. The sequence that works: visa on arrival purchased online before you fly, passport and onward-flight proof handy, bags collected, then straight past every freelance transport offer to your pre-booked driver or the official taxi counter. Seminyak is usually 30 to 45 minutes, Ubud more like 90 in traffic, Uluwatu 40 on the toll road. If your villa offers pickup, take it; the day you land is not the day to negotiate.
