The non-stop question, answered properly
Melbourne's direct Air India service is popular for good reason: twelve and a half hours, one boarding pass, no midnight repacking in a foreign terminal. But "should I take the direct?" has a more useful answer than yes:
- Take the direct when your dates are peak (Diwali, December, wedding season) and seats remain, when you are flying with children under five, or when the traveller is elderly and every transfer is a stress point. In those cases the hours saved are worth real money.
- Take the one-stop when your dates are flexible and the price gap is wide, which outside peak it often is. Singapore Airlines via Changi splits the trip into two civilised legs with the world's easiest transit between them; Malaysia Airlines via Kuala Lumpur is frequently the sharpest fare out of Melbourne full stop; Thai Airways via Bangkok times its overnight departure well for Victorian travellers.

Punjab, ticketed properly
A huge share of Melbourne's India traffic is really Punjab traffic: Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Chandigarh. The golden rule is one ticket, all the way. When your Melbourne to Delhi leg and your Delhi to Amritsar leg live on the same booking, the airline owns any misconnection: they rebook you, they look after the bags, and nobody is buying a new domestic fare at the airport at midnight. Booked separately, every delay becomes your expensive problem.
Two more Punjab-specific notes from years on this route. First, wedding season baggage is a science: sherwanis, lehengas and gifts outbound, shawls and sweets home. Late October to January. The everything-at-once season: Diwali, weddings, school holidays, Christmas. The direct flight sells out first, then the best Changi connections, then everything else. May to August. Delhi heat, then monsoon, and the gentlest fares of the year outside a brief July school-holiday bump. The right window for long family stays and flexible travellers. Mid-week departures out of Melbourne in this window are regularly the cheapest full-service fares on the whole route calendar.
September to October. The last calm weeks. Navratri and Dussehra begin building demand, and Diwali inventory is already selling hard. Anything festive should have been booked; anything flexible should book now for November onwards.
