Best Hotels in Colombo | Where to Stay, and Whether You Should

The two facts that decide your booking

Every other page about Colombo hotels will tell you about Galle Face and Cinnamon Grand. Fine hotels, both. But they bury the two things that will actually shape your first twenty-four hours in Sri Lanka.

One: your flight lands in the middle of the night. Not occasionally. Routinely. Flights from Australia connect through Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok or a Gulf hub, and those waves deposit their passengers in Colombo somewhere between two and five in the morning. That is the schedule, and it is not going to change for you.

Two: the airport is not in Colombo. It is roughly 30 kilometres north, near Negombo. Colombo is an hour away. Negombo is ten minutes away.

Put those together and the classic Sri Lanka mistake writes itself: land at 3am, take an hour-long taxi into a city you had not planned to spend time in, arrive at 4:30am at a hotel whose check-in is at 2pm, and sit in a lobby for nine and a half hours at the start of your holiday, having paid for the privilege.

What to do instead

Sleep in Negombo on the first night. Ten minutes from the arrivals hall, on the beach, with a hotel that arranged your pickup because you asked when you booked.

Book the room from the night before. This is the part people get wrong even when they get the town right. If you land at 3am on the 12th, you need a room for the night of the 11th. The room has to already be yours when you walk in at 4am, which means paying for a night you technically slept through in the air. It is the cheapest money you will spend on the trip and it buys you a bed at four in the morning instead of a chair.

Do not schedule anything for arrival day. Nobody drives to Sigiriya well on no sleep, and the roads deserve a version of you that has slept.

Negombo itself is better than its reputation as a mere convenience. It is a working fishing town with a lagoon, a long beach, good seafood and a pace that suits a first morning in a new country. It is not a destination, but as bookends to a trip it is genuinely pleasant. Compare Negombo hotels

When Colombo is worth staying in

All of which sounds like an argument against the city, and it is not quite.

Colombo deserves a day, and increasingly two. The food scene has become genuinely good, there is real colonial-era architecture in the Fort district, the Galle Face green at sunset is one of the better free evenings in South Asia, and the city has stopped being merely a place to change vehicles.

What it is not is the reason you flew here. Travellers who allocate four Colombo nights out of ten usually finish the trip wishing they had given those nights to the south coast or the hill country. One or two, at the end of the trip rather than the start, when you are acclimatised and want a decent dinner before flying home: that is the sweet spot. The hotels, if you stay

The Galle Face Hotel is the historic address, one of the oldest hotels east of Suez, sitting on the ocean at the end of the green. The verandah at sunset is an experience worth having even if you sleep elsewhere. It is history rather than perfection, and it knows that.

Shangri-La Colombo and Cinnamon Grand Colombo are the reliable modern choices: proper facilities, good pools, and the kind of consistency that matters when you have been travelling for eighteen hours. The Shangri-La's ocean views are the pick.

Cinnamon Red covers the sensible-money end well, and it is a genuinely good hotel rather than a compromise.

The market here is better value than most travellers expect. Comparable quality in Singapore or Bangkok costs considerably more, and Colombo's top end is priced for a city that does not get as many visitors as it deserves. Compare Colombo hotels

Where Colombo fits in the shape of the trip

Sri Lanka is a small island with slow roads, and that combination decides where your Colombo nights belong. The trip that works for most of our clients runs like this: land near the airport and sleep, head north into the Cultural Triangle while you are still fresh and the driving is worth it, turn south through the hill country to Kandy and the tea estates, then drop to whichever coast your month favours and stop moving for four days.

Notice where Colombo is not in that sequence. It is not at the start, because you arrive at 3am and the city is an hour in the wrong direction. It is not in the middle, because you would be doubling back across the island to reach it. It belongs at the end, if it belongs at all: one or two nights before you fly home, when you have earned a good dinner, a proper hotel bar and a morning with nothing scheduled.

There is one exception worth naming. If you are flying home on one of the pre-dawn departures, and a great many Australians are, then your last night is not really a night. It is four hours of sleep before a 1am checkout. In that case, come back to Negombo for the final night rather than staying in the city, and let the hotel drive you the ten minutes rather than the hour. We build this into the itinerary as a matter of routine, because the alternative is a taxi through the dark at midnight at the end of a good holiday.

The season, briefly

Colombo sits on the west coast, which means it follows the southwest monsoon: roughly December to March is the good window, and May to September is the wet one.

That is the opposite of the east coast, which is the single most important thing to understand about Sri Lankan weather and the reason our flights to Sri Lanka page has a month-by-month table rather than a season. If your dates fall in the middle of the year, the island is not closed; you should simply be on the other side of it, and Colombo becomes a transit stop rather than a stay.
