The city that works best when you stop sightseeing

Bengaluru will frustrate anyone armed with a monument checklist, because its pleasures are ambient rather than architectural. This is a city for long breakfasts, garden mornings, bookshop afternoons and craft beer evenings, the Indian metropolis that most resembles how Australians actually like to spend a weekend. Travellers who treat it as Melbourne-with-dosas have a wonderful time; travellers who demand Jaipur's palaces leave puzzled. Set the expectation correctly and everything that follows lands.

The anchor experiences: Lalbagh Botanical Garden at 7am, when the city walks its laps among 200-year-old trees and the glasshouse catches first light; KR Market shortly after, one of Asia's great flower markets, where marigolds move by the tonne up dim staircases that open onto a rooftop view of the mayhem; a darshini breakfast of idli-vada and filter coffee taken standing, then a second breakfast somewhere legendary because one is never enough; Cubbon Park and the museum quarter for the colonial-era city; and Bull Temple and the Basavanagudi lanes for old Bengaluru, where the metropolis briefly remembers being a town.

Eat first, plan later

Bengaluru's food identity starts with the tiffin rooms, temples of vegetarian breakfast where benne (butter) dosas arrive crisp-edged and the filter coffee is a civic institution poured between tumbler and davara until the froth is right. Join the queue; it moves fast and rewards patience with the best-value great meal in world travel. From there the city widens: fiery Andhra meals served on banana leaves, Mangalorean seafood kitchens, Muslim-quarter biryanis in Frazer Town (spectacular during Ramadan evenings), and a modern restaurant scene in Indiranagar and Koramangala that swings from izakaya to regional Indian revival without blinking.

Then there is the pub story. Bengaluru is India's craft beer capital, with taprooms and microbreweries threaded through the city and a Sunday-session culture Australians recognise instantly. The etiquette is familiar, the lagers are honest and the food menus take the assignment seriously. It is the easiest soft landing into India that exists.

Neighbourhoods, chosen by intent

• MG Road and the centre for first visits and metro access: walkable to Cubbon Park, the museums and Church Street's bookshops and cafés.
• Indiranagar for the eating-and-drinking trip: leafy streets that turn into the city's restaurant row, with the metro line running through it.
• Koramangala for the young and hungry: start-up country, dense with cafés, breweries and late kitchens.
• Whitefield and Outer Ring Road only if work demands it: the tech corridors are commuting distance from everything above, so business travellers with free weekends should relocate into town for them.
• Basavanagudi and Malleswaram for atmosphere: the old south Bengaluru of rangoli thresholds, temple bells and legacy tiffin rooms. Stay central, visit here often.

The day trips that justify the airfare

Mysuru is the non-negotiable: two to three hours by road or a comfortable train, and suddenly you are in the city of palaces the checklist travellers wanted all along. The Amba Vilas Palace interior is south India's answer to anything in Rajasthan, Devaraja Market is photogenic chaos, and Sunday evenings illuminate the palace with nearly one hundred thousand bulbs. Doable as a long day; better as an overnight.

Nandi Hills delivers the sunrise the city's influencers queue for, an hour and a half out, with fort ruins and coffee at the top. Go on a weekday; weekends are a convoy.

Coorg and Chikmagalur, four to five hours out, are the coffee estates: plantation stays, spice walks, morning mists and the origin story of everything in Bengaluru's third-wave cafés. A two-night add-on that pairs naturally with the city.

A working traveller's weekend, since that is often the trip

Half of Bengaluru's Australian visitors arrive for the tech corridor and discover the city by accident, so here is the shape that converts a work trip: Friday evening, escape the hotel belt into Indiranagar for the brewery-and-dinner initiation. Saturday, Lalbagh at dawn, KR Market while the energy holds, tiffin-room brunch, Cubbon Park and Church Street through the afternoon, modern dining at night. • Getting around: the Namma Metro's expanding lines beat traffic wherever they run; app-based cabs and autos fill the gaps. Respect the late-afternoon peak by planning around it, not through it.
• Money and connectivity: cards and UPI dominate; carry some cash for markets and darshinis. Airport SIM counters and eSIMs both work smoothly.
• Weather packing: light layers year round, a jacket for December and January evenings, and an umbrella in the monsoon months for the afternoon theatrics.
• Timing: October to February is peak pleasant; the city hosts festivals of food, theatre and lights through the season. Avoid planning around major cricket fixtures at Chinnaswamy Stadium unless you hold tickets, because the hotels certainly will not have forgotten.
