The city where geography beats stars

Most hotel guides tell you which hotel is best. In Bengaluru that is the wrong question, and answering it will cost you a week of your life in the back of a car.

This city's traffic is not a running joke, it is a planning constraint. Bengaluru grew faster than any road network could follow, and the result is a city where fifteen kilometres can mean ninety minutes. The tech corridors that made the place famous are not near the centre. They are their own cities, far to the east and south, and travelling between them and the middle of town at the wrong hour is genuinely dispiriting.

So the rule here is blunt: stay near the reason you came. A five-star hotel in the wrong district is worse than a decent mid-range one in the right district, and it is not close.

Central: MG Road, Cubbon Park, Lavelle Road

The middle of Bengaluru is where you stay if you are here to see the city rather than to work in it, and it is the right answer for most first visits.

You get Cubbon Park for a morning walk that involves no traffic, the museums and the older colonial-era architecture, Commercial Street for shopping, and the best concentration of hotels in the city. The Oberoi Bengaluru, Taj West End and ITC Windsor anchor the top of the market here, and the West End in particular is something unusual in India: a hotel with genuine gardens and a lot of history in the middle of a modern city.

The mid-range is deep here too, and because this is a business city, mid-range business hotels are consistently better than the equivalent in a leisure destination. They are built for people who do this every week and complain when it is not right.

If you are staying centrally, ask for a room away from the road. The city is greener and quieter than most of India, but MG Road is not. Compare central Bengaluru hotels

Indiranagar and Koramangala: where the city actually eats

These two districts are the reason Bengaluru has a reputation among Indians as the country's best city to live in, and they are where we send returning travellers.

Indiranagar is restaurants, bars, breweries and 100 Feet Road. Bengaluru is India's craft beer capital, which surprises people, and this is where that happens. The hotel stock is smaller and more boutique than the centre, and the neighbourhood is walkable in a way most Indian cities are not.

Koramangala is younger, more startup-inflected, and slightly cheaper. It is where a lot of the city's food scene has migrated, and it is genuinely pleasant in the evening.

Neither is a sightseeing base, because the sights are central. Both are excellent if your idea of a city is where you eat dinner rather than what you photograph. Our Bengaluru travel guide covers what is worth your time in each.

Whitefield and Electronic City: only if you must

Let us be direct about this, because it saves clients real money and real misery.

If your meetings are in Whitefield or Electronic City, stay in Whitefield or Electronic City. They are well over an hour from the centre in traffic and can be considerably worse. Booking a lovely central hotel because it is near the restaurants, and then commuting out and back daily, is a decision people make once.

The hotels out there are good, because they exist to serve exactly this, and they know their guests are not here for the view. What they are not is interesting. There is nothing to walk to. Your evenings will happen in the hotel.

That is a perfectly reasonable trade for a three-day work trip. It is a terrible one for a holiday. If you are mixing both, tell us and we will split the stay, which is a thing almost nobody thinks to ask for and which solves the problem entirely.

The airport, which is genuinely far

Kempegowda International Airport sits a long way north of the city, and the transfer is a real journey rather than a hop. This is one of the few Indian cities where an airport hotel earns its place, and it earns it for exactly two situations: a dawn departure, or an arrival late enough that going into the city is pointless.

For anything else, stay in town. The airport district is a functional place with nothing to recommend it beyond proximity to a runway, and two nights there is two nights wasted.

The rhythm nobody expects

Bengaluru's hotel market runs backwards compared to a holiday city, and it is worth knowing.

Mid-week is the peak. This is a business city, and Tuesday to Thursday is when the rooms fill and the rates firm. Weekends are frequently softer in the same hotels. If your dates are flexible and you are here for pleasure, arriving Friday is cheaper than arriving Monday, which is the reverse of Bali.

Conference weeks are the real spikes. The city hosts large technology events, and when one lands, the good central hotels go and the rates go with them. If your dates are fixed and a conference is on, book early and without agonising.

The weather does not drive the market, because Bengaluru does not really have a bad season. The plateau keeps it mild when the rest of India is unbearable, which is the city's great unadvertised advantage and the reason its evenings work.
